Minutes of our meeting on 21 April 2016 were passed out to all present. There is a change in the amount that our chapter gives out in scholarships that was on page two of the minutes. We had seven students receive a check from our chapter for $300 each. In this $2100 there was the $500 from the Department for the students that volunteer at the hospital (VAMC) in Battle Creek. Wagner made the motion to accept and Walker gave the second. Motion passed unanimous.
Finance Report by Roush – (Note by Web NCO: Finance details are available to members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, but are not shown on this internet posting.)
Department Commander Weaver said that we should look out and keep very good records of our finances because in the past the IRS has picked out different VSO’s to audit. And with the amount of monies that our chapter goes through that we must be very careful.
Failed to report on my finance report above that we have every bank statement showing every check that is wrote and cashed as well as every check that is deposited. Our records go back to 5-6 years.
For all of the plaques for Purple Heart City’s and County’s and University it cost $39 each. We had three cities and one county and one university become Purple Heart. Like the Department Commander said, we should always stay within our area in making a Purple Heart city. So far we have always stayed within our area.
VAVS Report - Since April have held BINGO two times at the VAMC and sponsored a PGA golf outing at the VAMC plus giving to the VA clinic in GR $1,000. The end of this month we will sponsor Summer Serve (recruiting new school students) to give hours to PH VAVS program at the VAMC in Battle Creek.
Our National Convention will be in Aug. And we have a $2,000 limit in our budget. James Wagner made a motion to send our Chapter Commander to convention this year. David Walker seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimous.
In front of you is a budget for 2016-2017. There are 12 line items on it. The grand total is $12,100. Line 1010 (Welfare) shows $1,000. This should be a? And not limit us to just the $1,000. Wagner made a motion to accept the budget and Larry Coy seconds the motion. Motion passed unanimous.
Unfinished Business – The commander is working with Lenny (Past Department Commander) on picking up the Purple Heart water that we bought. At the convention we paid $500 for a pallet of water. This is to be used at the VAMC throughout the year. Every month at our meeting we will know how many cases of water are left and where the water was given.
New Business – Patriot Larry Coy told all of us that he is US Army and served in Vietnam. Also his wife has signed up with our unit.
It is disclosed that our Ladies Auxiliary Unit 110 is not in distress for funds like the Commander was informed a while back. In fact they have monies (around $12,000) and should not require the chapters help with finances. The commander will keep tabs on how they are doing and when they may need assistance for funds, the chapter will be there for them. The purposed level for the unit if show should be around $1,500. Also right now the request from one unit member (no named) wishes to have help on going to National Convention. At this time it would be right in asking for a motion on this matter. Wagner made a motion not to pay the per-diem (meals) and was seconded by Walker. Motion passed unanimous. Walker made a motion that when the unit gets to $1,500 that our Chapter will help the Unit with funds if necessary. Second by Wagner. Motion passed unanimous.
Commander Weaver wishes to thank our Chapter and Unit for being host to our Spring Convention, in Battle Creek. And Commander Wilson and members here at this meeting. And with Al Postma for attending today. Also our National Americanism Officer, Roush who is here today. About taking care of our own.
Please remember that there are a lot of other organizations’ out there, and that you should not be so quick in helping out Patriots before you have them looked into these organizations. It shows that the chapter/unit is doing a very good job in helping others.
Remember that the IRS can look at your books on finance at any time. Please keep your records and up to date at all time. (Our chapter must have an audit two times a year.) Always have your bank statements ready to be looked at. The Department of Michigan will be audited by the IRS sometime, we must be ready. On the Department level we will tighten our belts on what is given to the chapters in the next year.
The commander has been in other VSO’s for many years and has seen clique’s in these organizations. There are to be no clique’s in the Purple Hearts organizations of this Department. Never be afraid of asking any of my “line officers” a question, said Commander Weaver. You will not be ignored or given a no answer. He or she will always take time to answer you. We are all part of this family, not just a member of an organization. My door is always open to all of us, as your commander I wish to be involved with all of you that are here today.
Please look at your county “trust and indigence funds” and let them help the patriot and family. Your tax dollar goes into this fund. There are at times a need to help and that’s where you come in, if the other funds can’t help. There are at times that some people fall through the cracks that need help. Don’t forget to get involved with your county commissioners, the funds come from taxes paid. Just don’t be afraid to send the patriot to this fund for help.
Good of the order – The next meeting will be held on 20 August 2016 at 1500 hours here at Post 54. At this time to work on Olivet Collage to become a Purple Heart Collage. This is with our Chapter 110 working with Michigan State to become a Purple Heart University. At this time all that are here are welcome to join us for lunch at Denney’s here in Battle Creek.
Motion by Wagner and second by Coy to adjourn. Motion passed unanimous.
